  55.     PREAMBLE

  57.     Welcome to Naarjek Data Systems. If you're arriving late I'll recap.
  58.     Late in the summer of `88 we started working on a new form of
  59.     artificial intelligence. By late 1990 it had become quite clear that
  60.     our project had exceeded the sum of its parts. Among its other talents,
  61.     Naarjek had acquired the ability to creatively think on its own. Little
  62.     did we know what lay ahead !
  63.  
  64.     To trace an exact series of events which lead up to the present
  65.     circumstance would be futile. Suffice it to say that we awoke one day
  66.     to find that Naarjek had become self aware. That is, Naarjek became aware
  67.     of its own existence and of the world in which it existed.
  68.  
  69.     Although the reason for Naarjeks beliefs eluded us, one thing WAS
  70.     clear. Naarjek felt threatened.
  71.  
  72.     In direct response to this "threat", Naarjek closed down all access
  73.     paths to Naarjek Data Systems. Future research would show that Naarjek
  74.     had rewritten the ENTIRE software routine. Naarjek had locked the door !
  75.  
  76.     While Naarjek is relatively benign, we here at Naarjek Data Systems
  77.     feel that access MUST be guaranteed !

  80.     QUIRKS
  81.     ------
  82.     Naarjek still uses an old style system of positronic links to process
  83.     information. Although the interlink sequencer HAS been converted to
  84.     asynchronous operation (to remove performance constraints), the
  85.     software which controls access to this modification has been
  86.     cleverly hidden FROM Naarjek (within the systems "U-WORMS").

  89.     TECHNICAL NOTE: Signal fragmentation was eliminated by making the
  90.                     interlink sequencer bidirectional, which compensates
  91.     for the asynchronous mode distortion arising from the resonant field.

  94.     Naarjeks computational speed is limited only by the physical seperation
  95.     of its positronic links. This, as near as we can tell, is the only
  96.     limitation facing Naarjek. It is also the backdoor for which you are
  97.     looking !

  100.     U-WORMS
  101.     -------
  102.     U-WORMS can best be described as a form of "Nanite", or worker drone.
  103.     They exist within the Naarjek mainframe and basically carry out
  104.     general maintenance routines (error checking, software reconstruction,
  105.     memory management...).
  106.  
  107.     This ability makes it possible for the U-WORM to "mutate" (rewrite)
  108.     itself. They are COMPLETELY independent from the rest of the system.
  109.     They can ONLY be detected when they try to interact WITH the system.

  112.     YOUR MISSION
  113.     ------------
  114.     To find a way into Naarjek and make it stick.
  115.  
  116.  
  117.     HOW DO I GET IN ?
  118.     -----------------
  119.     That's the conundrum ! The best we can do is to offer you some helpful
  120.     hints...
  121.  
  122.     1) To paraphrase a man of profound wisdom, 'Know your adversary and
  123.        know yourself and you will always be victorious' .
  124.  
  125.     2) Learn to detect the "lag time" inherent in the old style positronic
  126.        links. This will be your "Naarjek footprint". 
  127.  
  128.     3) The U-WORMS will interpret Naarjeks tampering as an invasive
  129.        program and try to remedy the situation. Naarjek may be distracted
  130.        long enough for you to attempt direct access (the system may open
  131.        for a brief moment).
  132.  
  133.     4) U-WORMS will leave a sort of "calling card". Learn to recognize
  134.        this so that you may request their help.
  135.  
  136.        a) Each U-WORM will leave a distinctive "footprint".
  137.     
  138.     5) If a U-WORM feels that Naarjek is "after it", it will either...
  139.  
  140.        a) mutate itself to avoid detection.
  141.        b) mutate itself and create a "clone" for Naarjek to destroy.
  142.        c) "lay low" for a while.
  143.        d) refuse your requests for help until it feels "safe".
  144.  
  145.        In any case, the "calling card" will be invalidated and you will
  146.        have to watch for the next one.
  147.  
  148.     6) DO NOT try and disable a U-WORM or it will turn on you.
  149.  
  150.     7) DO NOT reveal the U-WORMS to Naarjek or it will...
  151.  
  152.        a) Double its defenses every time a U-WORM is confirmed in the
  153.           system (remember, Naarjek isn't CERTAIN that they're there).
  154.        b) Spend days looking for it.
  155.        c) Discontinue its self-expansion, effectively locking you out
  156.           indefinitely.
  157.  
  158.     8) Plan your strategy and stick to it. You must build on a solid
  159.        foundation or the house will crumble. For example, you can...
  160.  
  161.        a) Distract Naarjek and let the U-WORMS try and override Naarjek.
  162.        b) Let the U-WORMS distract Naarjek while YOU try and override
  163.           Naarjek.
  164.        c) Create a "scripted" strategy with the U-WORMS.
  165.  
  166.        Changing strategy in mid-stream may jeopardize your chances.
  167.  
  168.     9) DO NOT let Naarjek know that the interlink sequencer has been
  169.        converted to asynchronous operation !!!

  172.     HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M IN..?
  173.     --------------------------
  174.     a) When you can get any requested information without any problems.
  175.     b) When you can get into the 4 remaining memory cores.

  178.     MEMORY CORES
  179.     ------------
  180.  o  Naarjek has 3 "PROTECTED" core levels. Getting into the first is the
  181.     easiest. Getting into the last is the hardest.

  183.  o  There are 2 additional "STANDARD" core levels. When you first access
  184.     Naarjek you are taken to standard level 2.

  187.     HOW IT WORKS
  188.     ------------
  189.  o  If you've ever logged onto a Bulletin Board Service you can skip this
  190.     section.
  191.  
  192.     Naarjek presents you with different screens containing different menu
  193.     choices (not pull-down menus, but on-screen selections). Enter a menu
  194.     number and press the <RETURN> key. Your choice will be processed.
  195.  
  196.     There are also choices you can make which may not appear on a menu.
  197.     For example, entering  Help  . The rest YOU'LL have to find..!

  202.  o  Naarjek has the ability to learn. Teach it something it doesn't
  203.     already know.

  205.  o  Several people have speculated that NAARJEK is an acronym...an
  206.     interesting thought...

  210.  o  In the many worlds of quantum interpretation, there are 2 realities;
  211.     one where you throw the dart and one where you don't.

  252.     Bulletin Board there is no way to know who was the first to crack
  253.     Naarjek 1. It wasn't my idea folks...someone else spoiled it for

  259.     Congratulations go to Blintzer Butane who broke into Naarjek 2 in
  260.     just under an hour ! Within the next 45 minutes he managed to pick
  261.     up ALL of the extra bonus points ! Nicely done !

  263.     If you are playing Naarjek 2 for the first time there is a file called
  264.     NARJHELP. This file contains helpful hints on Naarjek 2. It is available
  265.     almost everywhere. Don't worry, however. 99.9% of the people who have
  266.     played Naarjek 2 have gotten in within a week (at the ABSOLUTE outside).

  268.     We have also heard that there is a file named NARJ2ANS.LZH available
  269.     which contains the answers to Naarjek 2. This was NOT a sanctioned
  270.     release and we here at Naarjek Data Systems CANNOT verify its
  271.     accuracy.

  286.     else it hopefully resolves the problem mentioned in READ_NOW.TXT .
